Sgraffito Tiles Workshop
Learn the ancient art of sgraffito and create a pair of handmade decorative ceramic tiles — carved, glazed and fired at our studio in Lewes, East Sussex.
Sgraffito is one of the oldest decorative techniques in ceramics — and one of the most satisfying. You'll paint coloured slip onto the surface of your tile, let it dry, then carve through it to reveal the terracotta clay beneath. The result is a crisp, graphic design that's entirely your own.
We'll start by applying your slip and choosing your colour, then move into a short guided drawing exercise while it dries — helping you plan your design before you commit to the clay. From there it's into the carving, using loop tools and knives to bring each tile to life.
Focused, meditative, and deeply satisfying — this workshop is a brilliant fit for anyone who loves pattern-making, drawing, or decorative crafts. No ceramics experience needed whatsoever.

This workshop is led by Freya, one of our teachers whose work spans illustration and ceramics. She brings a brilliant eye for pattern, detail and design - and a really warm, encouraging teaching style. You're in great hands.
What's Included
Create two decorative terracotta tiles
All clay, coloured slip, tools and materials provided
A guided drawing exercise to plan and refine your designs before you carve

Our workshops are small (8 spaces), so bookings are paid in full at the time of booking.
If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible.
- More than 14 days before: Full refund (minus 10% administration fee)
- Within 14 days: Bookings are non-refundable
You're very welcome to transfer your place to a friend if you can't attend. If your space can be filled from our waiting list, we may be able to offer a discretionary refund or transfer.
If we need to cancel a workshop, you'll be offered a full refund.
